Sportsbook · two clocks, one margin
SPORTSBOOKS, TIMED AND PRICED
A casino has one clock. A book has two: how long a ticket takes to settle after the whistle, and how long the money takes to leave after that. Both are here, and so is the number that decides what the bet cost before either clock started.
Hold is the whole cost of betting and almost nobody looks at it. It is the margin baked into the odds themselves, so it is charged on every wager whether it wins or loses, and it is charged silently. Across the books here it runs from 2.2% at the sharpest to 9.4% at the widest.
That spread is 7.2 points. Put C$10,000 through a season and the difference between the two ends of it is several hundred dollars, which is more than any signup offer in this market pays. A bettor optimising for a bonus while ignoring hold is optimising the smaller number.
Settlement is the second clock and it is the one people mistake for slowness. A ticket that sits unsettled for three hours after a game ends has not been forgotten; it is waiting on a data feed, a stat correction or a manual check. The money cannot start moving until it does.

Hold is the published margin on a book's main markets. Settles is the median time from the end of an event to a settled ticket. Cashout median is measured on a C$400 request, the same bench the casino pages use. GO appears only where a book also runs a casino inside the 24 hour rule this site lists against; books past it, and pure books, carry no link.
How to read a price without reading a prediction
A market priced at 1.91 on both sides implies a total probability above 100%. That excess is the hold. Convert each price to its implied percentage, add them, subtract a hundred, and the remainder is what the book is charging you to be there.
Do it on the markets you actually bet. A book can be sharp on main lines and wide on props, and the average across a card is not the number you are paying if you only bet one of them. The tighter the market, the more the arithmetic rewards checking.
None of that involves an opinion about a team, a player or a result. It is the shape of the price, and it is true before anybody takes the field.
Where a chain rail changes a betting account
Settlement times are the same regardless of how the account was funded. What changes is the step after: a book paying on chain has no bank in the middle, which matters most on a Sunday night when a ticket settles and a fiat transfer would sit until Tuesday morning.
Stablecoins have a second advantage for a bettor specifically. A bankroll tracked in dollars and paid in an unpegged coin is two positions instead of one, and only one of them was intended. The coin pages cover that in detail: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, Litecoin, Dogecoin.
Limits, and why a winning account gets smaller
Books manage risk by capping what an account can stake, and the cap is not the same for everybody. That is a business practice rather than a secret, and it is the single most common reason a serious bettor moves between books rather than staying at one.
The market-level picture, including which postures exist and what they mean for a bankroll, is at limits. Weekly and monthly withdrawal caps are there too, and they matter more than a median for anyone moving four figures.
Asked about the books
What is hold at a sportsbook?
The fee for being there, charged inside the price rather than beside it. 19 books here publish one, between 2.2% and 9.4%. 7.2 points separate the ends, and it is taken on losing and winning tickets alike.
How long does a sportsbook take to pay out?
Two clocks, run one after the other. A ticket settles a median of 135 minutes past the final whistle. The money then leaves at a median of 1.3 days on a C$400 request.
